École élémentaire publique Michaëlle-Jean French Public Elementary School to celebrate Day of Pink with parliamentarians on Parliament Hill
(OTTAWA, April 10, 2012) — For April 11th’s Day of Pink, elementary and secondary schools at the Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario, Eastern Ontario’s French Public School Board (CEPEO), will participate in many activities to celebrate diversity and difference.
In particular, students of école élémentaire publique Michaëlle-Jean — invited by Jeremy Dias, director and founder of Jer’s Vision Foundation — will gather at Centre Block to talk to parliamentarians about diversity as well as offer a short outdoor performance on the diversity theme in front of Centre Block. During the event, 80 members of école élémentaire publique Michaëlle-Jean’s student choir – all dressed in Day of Pink shirts — will sing French classic La vie en rose, by Édith Piaf, while dancing a flash-mob style choreography.
The Day of Pink originated in an incident that happened in a Cambridge, Nova Scotia school, where a male student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. The next day, many students wore pink shirts in a show of solidarity. The Day of Pink is led by Jer’s Vision, a canadian youth organization whose mission is to fight discrimination and promote diversity.
Many other Day of Pink activities are planned for CEPEO schools. For instance, students at école secondaire publique De La Salle will create a giant human chain that surround the school building between 9: 20 am and 9:45 am on Wednesday April 11 in honour of Pink Day. The address for DLS is 501, Old St-Patrick Street, Ottawa
